Acupuncture Explained in 3 Steps!

This is one of my most favourite topics to discuss - mainly because I cannot imagine my practice without using acupuncture therapy! It is THAT good.

There is a common misconception when someone hears the word ‘acupuncture’. Some will believe it is painful, others will believe it is a placebo effect and most people will have absolutely no idea as to what acupuncture therapy does.

Well let’s get into it:

  1. Increases Blood Flow

When an acupuncture needle is inserted into the muscle, an increase of blood flow occurs which is good, because blood is like food for muscle. Blood carries Oxygen and Oxygen starts the entire healing process in the body.

  2. Reduces Inflammation

When doing acupuncture, the brain identifies the acupuncture needle as a foreign object. So as a protective mechanism, the brain begins to spit out Anti-Inflammatory cells to the area which in turn, helps with any visible or internal inflammation that may be occurring.

  3. Decreases Pain

Whenever I do acupuncture, I always leave it in for a minimum of 10 minutes. Why? Research shows that after roughly 10 minutes, our brains release endorphins; our feel-good hormones. This not only helps us reach a state of relaxation but it also helps to release our natural pain inhibitors we all carry. For example, if you stub your toe (OUCH), you’ll react by rubbing it, this in turn will make the pain subside BECAUSE your brain is signaling endorphin release. Cool, right??

So, all in all, acupuncture can help with pain, inflammation and help you feel relaxed.

It SHOULD be painless if done correctly and can benefit both acute and chronic injuries.

Fun Fact: I was voted best acupuncture provider (GOLD) in Durham Region in 2019!
